This weekend, Ziyi was in Taiwan to attend the 50th Golden Horse Film Festival. She picked up the award for Best Leading Actress for The Grandmaster.

China’s Zhang Ziyi picked up the award for Best Leading Actress at the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei Saturday in recognition of her role in the martial arts movie The Grandmaster. ” I’ve been nominated a few times for the Golden Horse Awards. I finally captured one today,” an emotional Zhang said in her acceptance speech.

She said making “The Grandmaster” was a long and difficult experience but it was fulfilling.

“Thank you director Wong Kar-wai for allowing me to encounter Gong Er at the most difficult time of my life and for encouraging me to be brave and believe in myself. I did it,” the 34 year-old Zhang said in her acceptance speech at the awards.

She also thanked her co-star Tony Leung Chiu-wai of Hong Kong and other cast and crew of the film.

The full nominations list of the Golden Horse Film Festival was announced today. It’s the fourth nomination Ziyi reveives at the Golden Horse, she was nominated for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, 2046 and Forever Enthralled.

The Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts film “The Grandmaster” led the pack with 11 nominations for the 50th Golden Horse Awards Tuesday, including lead acting nods for Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Zhang Ziyi.

The film, about the life of Yip Man, a late grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun, also garnered nods for best feature film, best director, best cinematography, best visual effects, best art direction, best makeup and costume design, best action choreography, best film editing and best sound effects, the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee announced Tuesday.

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, meanwhile, will be competing for best leading actress with Hong Kong’s Cherry Ngan and Sammi Cheng, and Taiwan’s Gwei Lun-mei and Shu Qi.

The Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will take place in November, 23th in Taipei.

The nominations for the 29th Golden Rooster Awards were announced Wednesday in Beijing. Ziyi was nominated in Best Actress category for The Grandmaster. Yan Bingyan (Feng Shui), Song Jia (Falling Flowers), Zhang Jingchu (My Running Shadow), Liang Jing (Son of the Stars) and Yang Zishan (So Young) are also nominated in the Best Actress Category. The Grandmaster received some nominations, but was not shortlisted in the Best Film category. The film received other nominations such as Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Wang Qingxiang).

The ceremony will take place on September 28th in Wuhan.

Ziyi walked on the red carpet for the premiere of Jérôme Salle’s Zulu at the Cannes Film Festival today. She was gorgeous as usual in her floral dress signed Christian Dior!


Later, she announced the winner or the Camera d’or prize (for the best first film) with Agnes Varda during the closing Ceremony. The Prize went to singaporian drama Ilo Ilo, directed by Anthony Chen. Chinese author Zhangke Jia won the prize of the best screenplay for his film A Touch of Sin. Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue is the Warmest Colour/La Vie d’Adèle eventually won the Palme d’or!


With the end of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, it won’t be long until the trailer for My Lucky Star is released…

Yesterday, “The Grandmaster” opened the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival where the film received mixed reviews. Wong Kar Wai said in an interview that the international version, shown in Berlin, was easier to understand for international audience and more mature. Chinese medias reported 20 changes, mostly minor including additions and omissions compared to the original version.

Western audience from U.S, Australia, New Zealand the UK will be able to watch the film on screen thanks to The Weinstein Co. who acquired the rights of ‘The Grandmaster’.

Ziyi, Tony Leung, DP Philippe Lesourd and Wong Kar Wai were reunited to promote the film.


During the press conference Ziyi said:

“For me, even though I didn’t know who my character was, I still think I’m the luckiest actress in the world,” – “If Wong Kar Wai asked me again to give him this amount of time, I would do it again. That’s how great he is.”
