Dangerous Liaisons and… The Grandmasters

We have some really good news from the Cannes Film Festival. Be warned, huge update.

Yesterday, Dangerous Liaisons was screened at Directors Fortnight. Unfortunately, Zhang Ziyi wasn’t in Cannes because she’s still filming Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmasters”. Cecilia Cheung and director Hur Jin-ho were there to promote the film. The producer of the film revealed that the cut screened at Cannes was edited in a hurry.

Even if the film is not fully finished, it received a standing ovation at the end of the screening. Below, several comments on the film:

It’s very human, romantic and sincere. I was touched and I even cried when the leading actor was breaking up with the innocent woman

Zhang Ziyi & Cecilia Cheung steal the show in Dangerous Liaisons. Zhang breaks your heart. Cecilia makes you root against her.

Dangerous Liaisons was exquisite, and brought in something new to familiar story. Cecilia Cheung is absolutely brilliant in it #cannes2012

And now, enjoy the first trailer

Moreover, The Grandmasters was screened in Cannes yesterday, not the whole film but some footage. Thierry Frémaux said that the footage was edited by Wong Kar-Wai for the festival.

The 5 minutes screened yesterday were focused on Ziyi’s character. Filmed in a snowy place, we can see Ziyi as a child looking at her father while he’s practising his martial art. At the same time, we see Ziyi training herself in the falling snow. The journalists who saw it were very impressed by the beauty of this cinematography. A Chinese journalist filmed the footage and posted it on Youku but it was quickly removed, although a copy was saved on Baidu. If you are curious. you can watch it here but be warned the quality is not good.

Dangerous Liaisons & Guizhou Braun

Ziyi’s new movie, Dangerous Liaisons, will be screened at Directors’ Fortnight on May 24th and May 25th. A new poster has been released for the occasion. According to some rumours, Jang Dong-gun and Zhang Ziyi won’t be able to come to Cannes this year. Ziyi is still busy filming The Grandmasters. Let’s hope we’ll know more in the coming days…

Also, Ziyi recently signed with the Chinese brandGuizhou Braun to promote collagen products in China.

Dangerous Liaisons at La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes

What an exciting news! Hur Jin-ho’s film “Dangerous Liaisons” will be screened at “La quinzaine des Réalisateurs” (17 May – 27 May) during the Cannes Film Festival.

Among the various sections at the Cannes Film Festival, the Directors’ Fortnight is distinguished by its independent-mindedness, its non-competitive nature and its concern to cater to non-professional Cannes audiences, which can buy a subscription for the entire Fortnight program or purchase tickets for individual screenings.

I invite you to take a look at the official page of the Directors’ Fortnight.

Let’s hope that our favourite actress will spend some time in France during the festival! Rendez-vous in May.

The Grandmasters not Ready for Cannes!

It’s a great disappointment for all of us, Deadline revealed that Wong Kar-wai is still shooting his film…

I can confirm that Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmasters will not be ready in time despite longtime hunches to the contrary. Vincent Maraval of Wild Bunch, which is handling the film internationally, tells me not only will it not be ready for Cannes, it won’t be ready for Venice or Toronto either as Wong will still be shooting even during Cannes.

Ziyi’s projects

Wong Kar Wai’s Grandmasters is rumoured to be screened at the next Cannes International Film Festival.

Ziyi has just finished the shooting of a movie called ”Wu Wen Xi Dong” directed by Li Fangfang. The film is a reflection of the Tsinghua University’s spirit. The university is also involved in the project. Ziyi is the leading actress alongside Huang Xiaoming (The Banquet). The film will be released at the end of the year in China. Huge thanks to Zhishui for his precious help. Take a look at the first pictures of the film.

In March, the actress will start the shooting of John Woo’s upcoming film.

Korea Herald is reporting that (via The Playlist) the director’s next film will be a wartime romance project, now titled ‘Love And Let Love.’

The film, originally titled ‘1949’, has been in the works for years now, but had seemed to fall apart a few years back, when issues arose with the film’s script and its rights. The project will star Song Hye-Ko and ‘1949’ lead Zhang Ziyi, as well as Chang Chen.

‘Love’ will follow the story of a woman in the wake of WWII, and her life during the Chinese Civil War.
