Ziyi talks about Forever Young

During the press conference of Forever Young on December 8th, Ziyi briefly talked about her role in the movie.

When Chinese superstar Zhang Ziyi recently appeared on stage to promote her upcoming movie Forever Young, she looked sad.

“I thought I’d died, but I woke up to see you. This time, I must find you before death seizes me,” she murmured, trembling slightly, while performing a scene from the movie.

Zhang, who is one of the top names among China’s celebrities, used the method to introduce her role in the movie.

In the film she plays Wang Minjia, a woman from the 1950s who leads a miserable life.

In the film the character suffers a number of misfortunes – from nearly being buried alive to having her face disfigured – which have a dramatic impact on her life.

Speaking about her role, Zhang says: “Without courage and endurance, an ordinary person would find it difficult to get through life.”

Forever Young Press Conference

The long-awaited film Forever Young will finally be shown in theatres, after almost 5 years of post-production. The cast and the director attended a press conference in Beijing to announce the official release date, which will be on January 12th, 2018.

The film, written and directed by acclaimed writer-turned-director Li Fangfang, was originally planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tsinghua University in 2011, with a budget of over 100 million yuan. The story covers four generations spanning a hundred years of modern Chinese history since World War II.

Actress Zhang Ziyi and actor Huang Xiaoming both mentioned in previous interviews that they cried after reading the script. By the end of 2012, the film had finished shooting but nothing has been heard since. Director Li commented in June 2014 that she is extremely meticulous about post-production and the film will be ready for release by the end of that year. However, it was not.

Sun Zhonghuai, CEO of Penguin Pictures and Vice President at Tencent Holdings Ltd., one of the film’s producers, said the nearly 6-year wait has made this production “a legend” in Chinese film industry.

Films Forever Young Public Appearances

Forever Young Beijing Press Conference

Thanks to the press conference held in Tsinghua University auditorium, we have some information about the film.

The shooting took place into the Tsinghua University campus. Some students of the university join the cast during the shooting. The script of the film has been changed several times during the shooting (even 20 minutes before the shooting) but the plot of the film remains quite mysterious. But what we know is that the main subject is the youth. Director Li Fangfang was tight-lipped but she revealed that she showed the script to the actors and let them choose their own role. The shooting in Beijing has been completed, the crew will shoot soon to the Yunnan. Shooting should be completed in September.

Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Huang Xiaoming played four students who harbour dreams of Tsinghua. Zhang Ziyi played a student and seemed to enjoy her “friendly” character and the stress-free shooting.

Wong Kar Wai’s Grandmasters is rumoured to be screened at the next Cannes International Film Festival.

Ziyi has just finished the shooting of a movie called ”Wu Wen Xi Dong” directed by Li Fangfang. The film is a reflection of the Tsinghua University’s spirit. The university is also involved in the project. Ziyi is the leading actress alongside Huang Xiaoming (The Banquet). The film will be released at the end of the year in China. In March, the actress will start the shooting of John Woo’s upcoming film.

Korea Herald is reporting that (via The Playlist) the director’s next film will be a wartime romance project, now titled ‘Love And Let Love.’

The film, originally titled ‘1949’, has been in the works for years now, but had seemed to fall apart a few years back, when issues arose with the film’s script and its rights. The project will star Song Hye-Ko and ‘1949’ lead Zhang Ziyi, as well as Chang Chen.

‘Love’ will follow the story of a woman in the wake of WWII, and her life during the Chinese Civil War.
