After more than 3 months of shooting in Shanghai, Peter Chan has finally wrapped the filming of his latest project, The Murderer. For the occasion, and if you haven’t seen them already, I’ll leave here some pictures of the locations. No set pictures with Ziyi so far, but it’s still worth checking out.

The filming of Ziyi’s next movie The Murderer is still underway in Shanghai and it should be until sometimes in March, but we have the chance today to watch its very first teaser trailer. The quality is pretty awful, but we’re grateful to whoever filmed it and shared it on Weibo.
Ziyi’s next movie, The Murderer (酱园弄), a passion project of Hong Kong director Peter Chan that took 7 years of preparation, is finally being filmed in Shanghai. An official teaser poster was just released today on the official Weibo @电影酱园弄, along with a short text:
A lot of rumors and speculation having been circulating online about the cast, but only Ziyi, Lei Jiayin, Li Xian and Jackson Yee have been seen of the set so far. Given that the cast list is very long and not completed yet, they didn’t make anything official so far. More rumored cast members include Yang Mi, Zhao Liying, Shen Teng, Liu Xiaoqing, Joan Chen, Huang Xiaoming, Zhu Yawen, Tong Dawei, Liu Ye and many more.
On June 10th, Ziyi attended the event Her Film Era Forum: Life Without Limits co-presented by Shanghai International Film Festival and Dior at the newly renovated Shengli Cinema in Shanghai with Hong Kong director Peter Chan. The actress accepted the Dior Female Filmmaker of the Year award.
The same day, Ziyi and Peter Chan then traveled to Suzhou to attend the 2023 Weibo Movie Awards, where they appeared together on the red carpet. They both shared some details about their upcoming collaboration, tentatively titled Murder of the Husband or The Murderer. Peter Chan told the interviewer that he’s been hoping to work with Ziyi for about 20 years. Afterwards, Ziyi and Shen Teng won Influential Filmmaker of the Year.
As stated by Peter Chan that day, the filming Murder of the Husband has not started yet, but it’s likely to start in Shanghai in the coming months.
After a few attempts to work with Peter Chan, particularly a book adaptation that was in development for years ironically called Waiting with Takeshi Kaneshiro, Ziyi may work with the Hong Kong director after all. Variety and Screen Daily are reporting that she will lead the suspense thriller The Murderer.
Projects starring Donnie Yen and Zhang Ziyi are among the independently produced TV series to be launched on the sidelines of this week’s Busan International Film Festival. The company responsible is Changin’ Pictures, a would-be studio being hatched by Hong Kong-based film director and producer Peter Chan Ho-sun.
Chan himself will direct Zhang in “The Murderer,” a suspense thriller set in 1944 Shanghai. Based on real events, the story focuses on a woman who is accused of murdering and dismembering her abusive husband. “By depicting the vagaries of her various trials, this series exposes the vicissitudes of leadership change in China from Japanese Occupation to the Nationalist government to the birth of new China,” Changin’ Pictures said.
Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi is set to star in The Murderer, a true crime suspense thriller based on a case in 1940s Shanghai. Chan will direct the thriller in which Zhang plays a woman accused of dismembering her husband.
