Zhang Ziyi Files Libel Lawsuit

Lawyers for the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actor say she suffered “immense grievance and distresswhen the Hong Kong-based tabloid Apple Daily reported in May that she had slept with the disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai, the former minister of commerce who was ousted from the Communist party politburo earlier this year, as well as other “high government officials”. The state-backed web portal China.org.cn also reported at the time that the actor was being investigated by the authorities and had been banned from leaving the country.

Zhang denies both sets of allegations and yesterday filed a lawsuit at the high court of Hong Kong seeking unspecified libel damages from Next Media over stories in its publications Apple Daily and Next Magazine. According to the South China Morning Post and the state-owned China News Service, she is also suing an unnamed Chinese language news website in the US that is believed to have been the source of the claims.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their concern. I really want to tell everyone my attitude about this.

“This ‘news’ is a complete lie. Both within the article and between the lines, there were contemptuous lies,”

“I met with my lawyers in Hong Kong and clearly expressed my position.”

“Whatever the cost, I will seek legal recourse and pursue this matter to the very end,”

“I read a lot of comments from people who don’t know the truth and they think this film industry is like that (rife with unsavoury dealings).

“This time, these (irresponsible reports) have not only hurt me, but maligned the film industry. And worse of all, they (some media outlets) made use of such hot topics to fool the public,”

Dangerous Liaisons and… The Grandmasters

We have some really good news from the Cannes Film Festival. Be warned, huge update.

Yesterday, Dangerous Liaisons was screened at Directors Fortnight. Unfortunately, Zhang Ziyi wasn’t in Cannes because she’s still filming Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmasters”. Cecilia Cheung and director Hur Jin-ho were there to promote the film. The producer of the film revealed that the cut screened at Cannes was edited in a hurry.

It’s very human, romantic and sincere. I was touched and I even cried when the leading actor was breaking up with the innocent woman

Moreover, The Grandmasters was screened in Cannes yesterday, not the whole film but some footage. Thierry Frémaux said that the footage was edited by Wong Kar-Wai for the festival.

The 5 minutes screened yesterday were focused on Ziyi’s character. Filmed in a snowy place, we can see Ziyi as a child looking at her father while he’s practising his martial art. At the same time, we see Ziyi training herself in the falling snow. The journalists who saw it were very impressed by the beauty of this cinematography. A Chinese journalist filmed the footage and posted it on Youku but it was quickly removed, although a copy was saved on Baidu. If you are curious. you can watch it here but be warned the quality is not good.

Potential Project: Under Heaven

According to some sources, Ziyi is set to star and produce the adaptation of Guy Gavriel Kay’s Under Heaven. Guy Gavriel Ray wants Ziyi in the character of Wei Song. Lets see if his “dream casting” comes true.

A development agreement has been entered into between author Guy Gavriel Kay and actress Zhang Ziyi and her management company and production partners Mosaic Productions, with respect to Kay’s most recent novel Under Heaven. Zhang Ziyi is attached to star and produce.

Still no director is attached to the project at this point. It may takes some years for the project to develop and Ziyi is still busy with the filming of The Grandmaster this month and the filming of the new movie of John Woo and Sophie’s Revenge 2. Next year will be huge for Ziyi!
